Birdies Co-Founder Bianca Gates Reveals How She Overcomes Self-Doubt, Finds Creativity and More

by Debra Bednar-Clark

I first met Birdies co-founder Bianca Gates when we worked together at Facebook. I was the Head of Global Strategy & Growth for Facebook’s Creative Shop, while Bianca was leading sales for the retail category. But we had more in common than simply working at the same company — we were both female leaders in tech who embraced style and we both had side projects that eventually took us out of corporate life and into the world of entrepreneurship.

For me, it was launching my own career + style coaching business. For Bianca, it was starting a fashion company from scratch: Birdies is a line of stylish slippers designed for those who love to look chic in their own homes (even newly-crowned Duchess Meghan Markle owns a pair!). Plus, not only is Bianca a superstar visionary, she’s also a wife and a mom to two beautiful children.

Learning to bring your whole self to work is a revolutionary concept that I know will enable every woman to lead like herself and in her own way. So, I asked Bianca to share her approach to work, style, life, and more!

I live by the motto…
Alone you can go fast. Together you can go far.

At the beginning of my career, I wish I knew…
The value of a good mentor.

My definition of success is…
Having options.

My strategy for always looking put together is…
Good jeans, a T-shirt, Birdies slippers, a good manicure, and a good night’s sleep.

I learned the importance of delegating when…
I had kids.

The most recent risk I’ve taken is…
Leaving my job at Facebook to run Birdies full-time.

I feel confident when…
I’m happy.

I overcome self-doubt by …
Getting a good night’s sleep!

When my head and heart are at odds, I make decisions…
With my heart.

I overcome a creative or inspirational rut by…
Getting a good workout.

I show my personality in my office space with…
A big sparkly chandelier in the middle of our offices.

The one woman who inspires me most is…
My mom because she has always led her life with purpose and passion and has taught me to do the same.

I ask for help when…
I know someone can do it better.

I know it’s time to slow down and nurture myself when…
I’m blaming my husband for everything.

I feel like my whole, authentic self when…
I’ve had a good night’s sleep and gone to the gym.
